Having been influenced greatly by the Han people, the Kavalan’s traditional architecture is nowhere to be found today. Nevertheless, literature states that during the Qing period, the houses of the Ketagalan, Leilang and Kavalan ethnic groups of the Pingpu peoples still used the “wooden-columned” structure, which is typical in Austronesian culture. This type of structure means that houses are built on wooden columns. According to the records of the Kavalan, Kavalan people hollow out a large piece of wood and use it as a roof. Since the Qing period, thatched roofs were used, which are similar to the Chinese-style roof.
