Compared with other indigenous peoples, the Amis have a larger population and hence, a larger settlement. In order to maintain the safety of all residents, bamboo fences are erected for the defense around the tribe, and almost all tribes have watchtowers. Today, such scenery is no longer available.

In the past, a residence consisted of a house, shed, barn and so on. In addition to the home, the assembly hall plays the most important role. The form of houses varied according to the distribution area. A traditional Amis family house is made of rectangular wood as beams and columns, bamboo or wooden boards as walls, and the roof is covered with thatch. There are two main types of houses:
1. North Taiwan: Open space with one entrance, such as the houses of Tafalong or Cepo’ village.
2. South Taiwan: House with indoor partitions and side door, such as the houses of the Falangaw village.

Traditional Amis House in Cepo’
The people of Cepo’ belong to the "Coastal Amis" ethnic group that live a typical agricultural and fishing life. Behind the fence entry, there are bamboo beds on both sides allowing people to rest, chat and chew betel nuts in hot afternoons. Inside the house there are rattan beds but no partitions. To the left of the entrance there is a stove for cooking, and to the rear half of the house there is a multi-level shelf for storing tools.

Traditional Amis House in Tavaron
This is the home of an Amis priest. The original building is located in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, but it has been damaged. Inside the house there is a rattan bed, a stove on both sides of the house, and has an open plan living with a single front door. The main column near the entrance depicts the sculpture of Amis ancestor. The other beams and columns are also decorated with distinctive patterns. It is one of the few Amis buildings with carvings recorded in the literature.

Traditional Amis House in Falangaw
This house has two entrances, beds raised above the soil ground and bamboo partitions between the beds, providing privacy for the eldery, married couples and unmarried individuals. This is one of the distinct features in Falangaw dwelling and shows signs of privacy.

Traditional Assembly Hall in Falangaw
The assembly hall in Falangaw has similar structure and style as the dwelling houses. It has an open-front design, a fireplace in the middle
with bamboo beds surrounding it. Usually, the elderly have the privilege to use the beds.
