The name, Thao, originates from its language, which means "people". The ancestral homeland of the Thao people is called "Shuishalian", which is rich in natural ecology and nurtures the unique culture of the Thao people. Today, they live in the area around Sun Moon Lake, with more than 60 households and a population of about 500 people. They are the most compact indigenous group in Taiwan.

Traditional Thao architectures can be divided into private dwellings and public assembly halls. The ancestor shrine is only built before a religious ceremony is held. The main materials used in traditional houses include wood, bamboo, stone chips and thatched roof. Influenced by the culture of the Han people, they began to use mud bricks and roof tiles in their constructions. Today, the houses are mostly made of reinforced concrete, which is no different from the houses of the Han people.

Traditional Thao Dwelling
The original house was built in Taimali Township, Taitung County. It has a front courtyard that is surrounded by a slate fence. There is an entrance on each side of the house, five beds in the front half of the house and a barn in the rear half. The house is quite large and has a separate pigsty next to it.
